Welcome to the web site evaluation page in this wiki. As I speak with educators across the nation I find there is a need for all teachers to emphasize proper web site evaluation by students. As part of my Digital Native/Digital Immigrant Presentation I call on Digital Immigrants (You and Me) to use their life long experience and education to show Digit ital Natives (Our students), how to make the best use of information they find on the web. In fact finding the information is a whole other topic and you can learn more at my blog 21centuryedtech in the series entitled "The Googal In Google"
I believe that web evaluation must be a simple process that can also be applied to memory. Thus the reason for my (A-G) approach. This Wiki Page is devoted to teaching these skills and I have spent hours preparing resources that you are free to use. I have divided this page using this A-G approach. I think you will find it easy to use, and should find good use for the PDF files, mini power points, activity sheets, and short video lessons. Please if you ever have the opportunity, visit me at one of my conference presentations, check out one of my webinars, or invite me to your school district to help inform your entire faculty. It really is time to help kids understand that there are no whales in Lake Michigan, the Southwest Tree Octopus is nonexistent, study of cats and
bearded men did not really happen, moon creatures failed to film the lunar landing, and Columbus was not born in Australia. Below I have listed my (A-G) steps and you will then find each Letter that represents an evaluation step as a separate groups of resources.. Note that there are links to my 21centuryedtech Blog that will have expanded information, and by the way please take a moment while you are there to sign up by RSS or email. - Mike Gorman at (21centuryedtech)

A is for Author
One of the most important areas necessary in evaluating a web site is determining the author. Realize that the author may not always be listed. The sponsor should also be considered since this is the group usually supporting the web site and its content. A good researcher will also know to research the credibility of both the author and sponsor by cross-referencing on the web and using other resources available.

B Is For Bias
One of the most important findings in determining the usefulness of a web page is discovering if a web site has any Bias. Wikipedia defines bias as a term used to describe a tendency or preference towards a particular perspective, ideology or result, when the tendency interferes with the ability to be impartial, unprejudiced, or objective. In other words, bias is generally seen as a 'one-sided' perspective. ...” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bias. Learn in detail by exploring the main blog posting at 21centuryedtech. C is for Currency
Currency refers to the date which an article was published. A researcher must remember that there may be several dates on the web site. These may even include the web site’s date of origin and a web site date of update. In other words, when the web site was first created and when it was last up-dated. These dates may be totally different from the date an article is posted on the web site it resides on. Proper research demands that one know the difference. There may even be times when the article or web site has not listed a formal date. In this case, one may have to find hints of publication date by scanning the article. Last, it must be determined if currency is relevant to the research at hand.

E is for Effectiveness Of Purpose

Good research depends on the ability of the researcher to know exactly what the purpose of his research is. One must determine if the website being evaluated provides for the needs of that purpose. A biased site could be useful if it provides valuable arguments and defensible facts that assist the researcher in his mission. Writing a fair and balanced paper may require quotes that represent both sides of an issue. Knowing one’s purpose is possibly the most important idea to investigate before seeking information from the internet.

F is for Facts And Content

The facts and content provided on a website is, after all, the reason a researcher is visiting that site. It is important before using material gathered from a site that all facts and content be validated.

G is for Good Links

In order to evaluate a web page it is useful to know a little bit about web links. Web pages usually have incoming links (links going to the page), outgoing links (links the website is choosing to send reader to), and broken links (links that no longer work). Take a moment to discover what story a link can tell in the usefulness of a web site for research.
